As Ramana Maharshi was nearing the end of his human life (1879-1950), one of the ashram peacocks flew onto the roof above his bed, making a loud rattle and clatter. Hearing the bird, Ramana asked, “Has anyone fed the peacock yet?”, before exhaling his last breath.
Like all great sages, the Maharshi never spoke casually, compelling listeners to deeply consider whatever he said.
In many parts of the world, the highest significance that humans attribute to peacocks is that their fanning tail feathers represent the “thousands of eyes” of all the energies of the living universe.
In his final moments, Ramana Maharshi asked about a peacock’s welfare…

And, ultimately, as he well knew, it is only the Living Mystery that feeds, breathes, and lives the peacock – and the world.

Speaking of “Who” as Divine Mystery, I’m reminded of the Arabic “Hu”, which is a name of Allah. “Who am I” thus becomes “Hu am I”.

So true! The Divine Mystery is the only one who is feeding all worlds and beings and things, with the energy and substance and consciousness of the Source Itself! Thank you….
